Late Night Weirdness

Well....I have a tumblr -cue dramatic music- and I told my followers to send me doodle requests- Because it's obviously more productive than finals (which I actually made good progress on today so I still feel ok). Anywho, the various things that happened:

The Hedley Kow

Electronic Illustration finals are finally getting closer to a finish point. Actually finished one today- The Hedley Kow title/chapter header.

The Bear and The Langur

Finished for class at any rate. I'd like to go in with some colored pencil and maybe some acrylics but the teacher only wants water colors- so until I get it back it'll stay as is.

Playing

Since apparently having finals for all my classes isn't enough work.

But a little bit o' school work here (ad team -SHOCK-) :

We ended up going with the last cow card for the game we're doing. I'm perfectly alright with it but I'm still kind of fond of the second one too. Our game is "Showdown in Treabue" might or might not show more work from it depending on the outcome.

And look! I'm trying landscapes for once in my life!

Contests and things.

Good god.

Lord of the Rings is the whole reason I realized art was a career. I love it with all my heart and the opportunity at crits from these guys and even prints of their work.....just wow. Goodbye tumblr hello art.

(on a side note I feel this blog post is pretty short and silly but hey, I've just alerted you of an opportunity!)

Something cute?!?

Quick value study and thumbs for class on Monday- we're doing a watercolor painting and it has to involve two animals interacting. Here we have a gray langur telling a story to a moon bear. Makes perfect sense.

Really my main focus was trying to play to my strengths with prominent shaping but it turned out cute. Seeing how I'm lacking in cute portfolio pieces I'm ok with this.

WIPS

They're everywhere.....Finals are to blame.

(roommate contribution)

Notice how reference images get replaced by movies....and how friends like to help each other along by drawing helpful adjustments on separate layers.

Not sure if this post was going anywhere....basic process for me digitally seems to be blocking everything in back to front, adjusting colors, then refining with lots of canvas flipping. Can you tell I'm still struggling with faces? Onwards and upwards I suppose.

Quick update

Some gestures from class today- we're wandering the city in commercial figure drawing now and creeping on people. Would love to make it a habitual thing to do outside of class but homework is taking up too much time to do it now.

Cloud Watching

Paint Blots. Same difference. Past couple of days I've found some imagination relaxation in creating and extorting lots of paint splatters. I know that scribbles are also recommended but paint has a mind of its own which results in even less control. Then your imagination is more free than before to come up with bizarre solutions.

The downside to paint instead of scribbles is that sometimes there's more blending together than one would like. But it's a useful challenge in shaping and creativity. Seeing how I enjoy this to no end expect to see more in the future.

Reading, again?

Actually just finished off A Good and Happy Child by Justin Evans and it was quite the snagging read.

As such I'd recommend it, and reading in general. Last year I didn't read anything (with the exception of the Death Note series and Good Omens- also excellent). I vowed to change that coming into sophomore year and while it hasn't changed much I've still done much better (having gone through The Exorcist, Bartimaeus: The Ring of Solomon, Y: The Last Man, and A Good and Happy Child. Dracula is currently in progress....). Either way it's a healthy habit to get away from all the pressures of reality and inspiring to no end. And, according to a bumper sticker I saw yesterday "Reading is sexy".

Shutting up and moving on with art though, here's a couple pieces from commercial figure drawing. Black and white acrylic:

I think it's fair to say that painting "just makes sense" to me. Throwing down shapes and images has always been easier than hatching away with a pencil or pen but each media has its pros and cons.

Hey, reading material!

http://www.austinkleon.com/2011/03/30/how-to-steal-like-an-artist-and-9-other-things-nobody-told-me/

Found this article this morning and it's a really good read. Now I'm all inspired and will get around to more art today which I will post tonight.

(oh, and minor brag- the piece I did for the Lowell Tolstedt drawing competition got in as a finalist- woot!)
