Finals

Title says it all I should think. We're down to the last couple of days of school now and while waiting for a scanner to free up so I can continue to work I'll post something quick here. Surprisingly finals haven't crushed my spirit (artistically speaking) and I can't wait to be done so I can get going on some personal projects (and one piece esp. for SOI). Actually perused around for some previous winner of Society of Illustrators and found the results quirky- a lot of the pieces were phenomenal to say the least but others were part of a "Wait, what?" moment. Feels like friends and I could stand a chance with what we enter but I don't want to get too hopeful on that front. Mostly just want to produce a kick-ass piece. Will be updating here with my progress on the piece I have in mind. All I'll say for now is "The Exorcist" and expect thumbnails sometime tomorrow.

And yes, I know the thing at the top of this post is exceedingly....gross. Needs some fix ups but it's done enough now to turn in so we're moving onto other things .

aaaaauuuuugghh

My sketchbook is killing me to say the least- due monday and I've been going at it all weekend. Never procrastinating that much again.
Either way some other things to take a look at:

(note- I suck at taking pictures, will get better ones when this piece is finished)
and a wip painting that's getting finished sometime tonight for Monday.

That illustration methods piece before I run away for turkey break

Note to self- CALL WACOM.

I feel I've definitely been ignoring creatures as of late and this was me guilt-tripping myself back into them the other day during Elect Illus class. Hamster deer? I think so.

Figure drawing. 6hrs so far.

I'm a midnight fist fight

Yep. Purple and pink angel. Gross I know but it'll be changing pretty drastically.

I'm an alligator!

I think titles are quickly winding down to random song lyrics.

After a 36 hour painting spree I don't have time to take a pic of the painting. Typical. I did spend my entire weekend working on my Illustration Methods "No Place Like Home" piece however and I actually like how it turned out. Granted there's a few spots I'd like to fix up but hopefully I'll get it back next week so I can share and fine-tune it.
In the meantime though, have some doodles.

Out of it.

Being out of it does not help one's artwork. At all. I think this headache/fever thing should go away so I can do more useful things than transferring drawings XD
Either way figured I'd throw out an update here as minor as it might be.

First off, fat horse.
Not bad horse. Fat horse. Big difference. Might I also mention at this point in time that whomever designed this monstrosity of an equine, they did a damn good job! Let me just say that if a horse could get this fat it probably would look pretty similar. Next up is alien planet no place like home something or other. It's easier if one doesn't ask.
Obviously still very much in progress and due on Monday. Joy.

Now I figure at some point in time here I should reveal some of the things that have been taking up a lot of my time that I really don't care about *cough*advertising*cough* However my last advertising project of this semester (for the solo class at any rate) looks like it might be pretty entertaining, so hopefully will get a couple of cool posts out of that.

Just throwin out a minor update here, a couple of random school stuff and a current project. First off, the mountains from that design for illustration project. I'm fairly amused with how it turned out.

I should've remembered to take pictures of my in progress Illustration Methods (alien planet) piece, but I didn't so I'm afraid anyone looking at this is stuck with my part II of electronic illustration homework. (head, meet desk/wall/other hard blunt object.)
Now on a good conscious I can't leave that last image with you as THE last image. So have some Opera. Just a fun screen shot of a fabulous Looney Toons episode. I'm sculpting the horse (and possibly bugs) for someone's xmas gift. I'm also doing other figures for other people but they might be looking at this blog every now and then so this is the only one I feel safe posting.

Now I need to run back to my apartment and get my clothes out of the dryer.

Neglected Projects

Guilt tripped myself into working on this guy more today- gonna be interesting seeing where this one ends up. I actually like it enough to definitely finish it but it's gonna take a while....

Writing.

After a walk last night I determined I want to create a graphic novel. My current idea on it is based off of a screenplay I'm writing for my screenwriting class. It follows a guy (steve) who's riding a bus. His thoughts, ideas and stereotypes begin to define the reality around him- making it a downward spiral into his subconscious. The graphic novel would be on a much broader spectrum following different individuals and include angels and the end of the world. Lots of fun stuff in one place. Current idea here:

Steve and similar individuals see things- these things are part of their own subconscious. Some force these on the normals world while others keep it to themselves and try to figure it out/make it stop. These subconscious projections are in part the fault of an angel(s) who got bored and “blessed” these individuals. Now other angels have to intervene as the end of the world is about to come around and these people are fucking up their plans.

If you want to delve further- screenplay snippet:

Apologies they're just separate screenshots but didn't want to clog up a post with a ton of text.

Geekery

I've listened to that song at least 30 times. Since yesterday. Expect Tron fan art after Tron Night tomorrow. I am such a lost cause.
Currently being a geek has been a bit of a downer- mostly in the fact that when you're a geek you invest so much obsession in a very specific idea or concept that if someone doesn't "get it" you're instantly shot down. Cue angels.

That there be fallen angels, Lucifer front left. My geekery over angels in the past year or so has led to a very specific idea of what angels really are. Introduce a teacher who's critiquing the piece and doesn't know the entire realm of angelic beings you've created and get ready for a downfall. Teacher's impression: winged robot women. So teacher would like to see more elegant figures, less bulky, more flowing wings.....

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...........!!!!!!!

I don't know where this is going but the project for this class shifted to my other line work piece:

Still a few things that need tweaking but it'll be entertaining. But GRR. I think it's time to get serious on this angel realm stuff and GET IT TOGETHER. Time to change that chick with wings mindset. Trick is finding the spare time but that's an entirely different can of worms. The most immediate result from this all is be less attached I suppose. Play nice, finish the school work as best as I can and work on portfolio work that I feel matters (and no, that does not mean my portfolio will only consist of angels.) Sculpture and Digital will be on the rise in Apartment R. Along with movie watching. I've really been slacking on that front and while a lot view movies as simple leisure, they're so much more. Hopefully these influences will narrow down my career ideas.
But this has wound down into another rant and a lack of art. Apologies for that :) Will have to attempt a post again tomorrow with more work, less talk.

Daily? NONSENSE!

I only say nonsense because I'm cheating to a degree here. These little pieces were done as part of a process for my Design for Illus class last earlier this week- that post a little while back, with the guy I wanted to use, and vacation? That's this.
Petra! Cool place, would love to go someday.Someplace in the autumn. Trees and stuff. Yeah. The house is going to get kicked out though to be replaced by a canoe. My least favorite. Going to have the beach continue across the image slightly downwards and swooping across.
Got in the groove of painting digitally for once, so this one's cool in my book.

So what the teacher and I determined in class was to take the mountain one and develop it more graphically like the autumn leaves one. Progress thus far:

I guess the end product is going to something along the lines of a calendar page? Not exciting but it's something I suppose.
And just as a heads up, more angels and creatures in next post.

Onwards!

Ok, here we are again in the same week. Now that I'm thinking about it I would really like to update daily but I'm not dedicating myself to something like that yet. If I manage to pull it cool, if not, ok. Either way, current angel progress:

Regularity?

(toys are awesome. that is all.)

cue actual blog post:

Well regularity's a pretty simple goal at any rate so we'll see if I can keep this up. So annoying nagging realizations aside from the last post, personal projects are on the rise. Giant goal for the year- apply for several internships for this summer. With luck I'll get one but I know that I will be far from a quality portfolio if I rely only on school work. Not like logos and graphic design can't be fun, but....um, yeah.
(ok ok, I do like this logo and how it's turning out but my concentration is definitely in other areas at the moment.)

Illustration is where we're headed. Kind of. I think. But moving along with artwork at any rate.

Ok, this is the first figure drawing I've done this year that I've kind of liked. (Lookit those planes!)
and figure drawing this week continued with more planes- more specifically hands, feet, and faces. The foot was the only one I really finished.
This was a portrait done in my Illustrations Methods class a couple of weeks ago, approx. 20 min.
Don't know why I'm shading things more graphically but it's working well so far so we'll see where it goes. And a little more illustration methods work- in class we had to come up with 5 verbs and 5 nouns, then combine a pair to make an illustration. Interesting to say the least- the two words I chose were "doorknob" and "yell". A gate to hell was the only logical things to do anyway. Working in acrylics is an interesting process- the last time I seriously worked with them was senior year in high school so getting back into the swing of things has been pretty difficult. Things have been improving but it's been slow.
And time for work not related to school- this first one was actually for a project I'm doing for Design for Illustration but the teacher felt it was too far of a leap from the original four part process she's having us tie into the final piece. Long story short- we were given different catalyst words (mine was vacation) and we have to do 4/5 separate pieces each using something different (texture, pattern, decoration, etc.) I was doing 4/5 different "typical" vacation spots then for the final "real life application" have a poster/album cover with this poor guy being forced to watch vacation spots on stacks of tvs. But I was told it was too far off, to save this idea for future use, etc. But I'm working on him now because I like him. Did notice when editing his photo that he's a bit too straight and rigid- will fix him up asap.
Continuing on into the realm of personal projects however I've had this painting drawn out for a while now (this is only a part of it) but I really want to start painting again soon when I get the chance. So hopefully there'll be a small update on this guy in my next post.

Recent sketchbook doodling has found me back at the familiar things- skull people and angels. I actually feel like I'm getting closer to a final "set" of angels though so I'm continuing with them almost all the time now to get everything sorted out.

And our final distraction from school- a sculpture. Still a ways to go yet but I'm liking him so far (please excuse that god-awful full-length leg and very rough neck/head though). He's loosely based on a sketch I did a few months back.
